Jands Theatre Products, Curtains


Below is a list of the standard fabrics stocked by Jands Theatre Projects. Specialised, non-standard fabrics can also be sourced by request. All fabrics can be sold raw or made up to specification in the purpose built Jands Sewing Room.

Please Note: Levels of flame retardation vary. Colours are available as standard for most fabrics. Colours can also be made to match on request, but a minimum of 250 metres is required. Full piece lengths typically vary between 45m and 60m.

Most stage furnishings or onstage drapes are manufactured from wool. This is mainly due to the fact that it absorbs light well, is durable and cost effective. Most people will refer to these curtains as “Blacks”. They are primarily there so people don’t see the back stage areas and when in the correct place “mask” the stage to allow the black box illusion of theatre. Jands manufacture blacks for theatres, as well as for use in rock concerts, rental drapes, film sets, wall curtains in cinemas and just about any place that needs to be blocked from an audience and require a fabric that is dirt resistant and inherently flame retardant.

Velvet is a beautiful and luxurious fabric, but you must provide extra attention to the care and maintenance of this fabric. Velvet Velour should not be confused with velveteen. Velour is a cotton fabric that has a deeper pile than velveteen, is heavier in weight and is commonly used in draperies. Our range includes:

Standard Velvet Velour – an economical lightweight velvet recommended for use in areas such as school house tabs, rental drapes, commercial or trade shows, entertainment and cultural centres.

Verdi Velvet – a heavyweight velvet recommended for use in areas such as theatrical venues, performing arts centres and touring shows.

Vegas Velvet – the “Rolls Royce” of velvet, a heavyweight velvet with excellent light absorption qualities recommended for use in areas such as major theatrical venues and productions. Also suitable for scenic paint.

Blackout Fabrics

In The Dark is a completely opaque material, double faced and printed satin fabric, manufactured from inherently flame retarded polyester yarn, recommended for use in areas such as schools and window curtains for AV rooms, convention centres and film.

Lycra is a trademark used for a brand of Spandex, a synthetic fibre known for its exceptional elasticity. It is stronger and more durable than rubber, its major non-synthetic competitor. Classified as an elastomeric fibre, it can be stretched and expanded to twice its original length.

Scenery Fabrics

Our range includes:

Molton – a light absorbent, brushed matte finish cotton fabric recommended for use in areas such as trade shows, masking drapes and exhibitions. As it is 3m wide, it is also economical for school blacks.

Sharkstooth – is recommended for use in areas such as theatrical scrims, on props and for loudspeaker scrim covers. It is often used as a lighting tool and is designed either to defuse light, allow reveals by front/back lighting and for a host of different effects.

Filled Cloth – literally Sharkstooth filled in with extra woven fabric. Usually located near the stage back wall and used for projections. It provides an ideal backdrop for stage lighting effects, colour mixing and image projection.

Scenery Netting – is recommended for use in areas such as opera, ballet and theatrical productions. It is ideal for scenery flats and effects cloths.

Scenic Gauze – it offers maximum transparency and gives the illusion of disappearing when backlit. It also helps create distance when placed in front of a sky cloth.

Natural / Bleach White / Black Canvas – is recommended for use in areas such as pattern making, to cover scenic flats, large pained backdrops and cycloramas. Note: water base scenic paint should always be used.

Chromakey Cloths

Chromakey is recommended for use in areas such as TV and video production as it provides ideal colour saturation for keying effects.

What colour Chromakey should I use – Blue or Green?

Choose a colour that is not prominent in your subject. For example, if the subject has green clothing on, choose the Blue Chromakey Screen / Backdrop. If the subject has blue clothing, you would then choose the Green Chromakey Screen / Backdrop.
